the magic pig

Friday, October 17th, 2008

animalminitabletopvacuumWhile the instructions say “keep out of reach of children five and under,” I know from experience that there is no greater joy for my two-year-old daughter than vacuuming up crumbs with her magic pig.  (There’s a cow too, if steak’s more your thing.)

And by my calculations, the rebate (send in a form, get a prepaid Visa card in return) brings this sucker down to a very magical $3.

lost and found

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

keyfinderFor my friend Janine, whose Facebook updates often refer to her losing the remote control (and then being forced to watch The Breakfast Club in Spanish because she can’t change the channel): attach one transmitter to your keys/cell/small child/dignity, and the main box to your fridge–so you’ll never lose it, natch.  When you can’t find your stuff, press the button, and an alarm will sound.  Like the page button on your cordless phone, but infinitely more useful.

xshotX now marks the shot:  with this ingenious self-tripod (sipod?), you won’t return from vacation with an album full of halffaces and fiveheads.

steamy wonder

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

brevillehealthsmartsteamerWhen it comes to cooking, I am incredibly lazy.  I also try to be healthy, and the two don’t always jive.

As if the heavens opened and answered all my nutritional prayers, this steamer will prepare an entire meal–protein, veggies, and rice–all at once.  Memo to my family:  get ready for some serious salmon and green beans.

page point

bookdartsOnce upon a time, long long ago, I was a graduate student in English literature.  For a span of three years, I thumbed through, scanned, pretended to read, or actually read hundreds of books, as graduate students are wont to do.  I’m occasionally inclined to re-read some of these books (especially the ones I didn’t actually, um, read), but the explosion of marginal notes, dogeared pages, and bored doodlings make it difficult.

These Book Darts would have solved that problem; their minimalist, reusable design allows you to annotate, without actually annotating your text.  An elegant, useful, inexpensive solution–the total antithesis of grad school.
